What can I expect from coaching?
Here are a few themes common across most coaching engagements. That said, your program will be unique to you, and we’ll always work in a way that supports your growth.
Support is always here.
Coaching creates a container—or space of intention—around the growth you envision for yourself. For as long as the coaching relationship lasts, the two of us are in this container together. We won’t be in contact every day, but we’re also not just limited to our sessions.
Think of it like we’re on a long hike together—there will be the ‘official’ times when we stop to check in (our sessions), and times that we’ll walk along separately. There may be moments you need my help or simply want to point out something beautiful that you see. But we are on the same walk, and I’m never far behind you. So, if you are struggling, or have an ‘aha,’ a question, or anything else you want to share, email me.
Your growth will be happening all the time, not just in our sessions.
Life will give you situations that highlight what you’re working on: challenges, miracles, and everything in between. You’ll have “assignments” between sessions that will help you track this, but it’s also good to have this awareness going in so you can start paying attention in this way.
If your program is writing-focused (not all are)….
Send me your writing if that is part of the plan.
Don’t wait for it to be finished or polished or anything else your inner critic says it needs to be. (Also, trust yourself. Some things you write really are just for you. If it feels oogie to share it with anyone, by all means, hold it close.) You are not burdening me by sending work regularly.
It’s quite possible that you’ll have some resistance to writing or aren’t ‘producing’ anything at all.
This, too, is part of the process. You haven’t ‘failed’ if nothing is happening, especially at first. It’s simply something we’ll work with in our next session.
The more you put into your program, the more you’ll get out of it.
This doesn’t mean bend over backwards and do every practice to the letter. It simply means to keep your attention on the work. Notice all the ways it’s unfolding, and remember that you are being held by the coaching container.
